Manual of "PTC - Tools" program

The PTC - Tools program is useful to configure and control the devices Mini-pc model R provided with the Advanced Solution.
It also allows to import/export data to/from files, and to send counts to the People Tally Counter web-server to get statistics.

We stronlgy recommend to read this manual before using the program.

At the very first start-up of the program, we suggest to check if the timezone is correct selecting the item Configure program of the "?" menu.

Warning: the starting configuration must be executed after have verified the correct working of sensors (e.g. photocells).

Turn the device off (in this particular case you have no choice but unplugging it) and extract the USB drive placed close to the WiFi dongle.

Insert the USB drive in the pc where the PCT-Tools program is working.

Select the Connect item of the "USB Drive" menu.

The program will search for the USB drives connected to the pc: if only the device drive is present, it will be automatically selected. Otherwise, a drive list will be shown to choose the item with the name PTC (or PTC1, PTC2 ...):

The first time a drive is connected to the program, you'll be asked to create a new device: answer Yes to initialize the device configuration.

new device

A control panel with some operative tabs shows up:

Check in the Configuration Tab if the device has been activated.
If not (Device NOT activated), go to the Device Activation section of this manual.

If it's already activated (Device activated) and it must work connected to the Internet, after the WiFi configuration (see WiFi Tab) you can enable the data automatic upload to the People Tally Counter remote server.

If you need to measure one count per every single passage, enable the single hit mode check-box.
Attention: this mode affects the way counts (and then statistics) are calculated. Therefore, it's strongly recommended to set up this parameter before to begin using the device effectively.

If a WiFi network is available, open the WiFi Tab to configure the local connection inserting SSID and Password, and then clicking the save changes button.

If you did some test passages to check the sensor-device connection, go to the Data Tab to visualize the revealed events.
Otherwise, we suggest to execute some test passages before disabling the TEST mode.

If everything is ok, go back to the Configuration Tab to disable the TEST mode.

If you wish, enable the automatic upload.
If the automatic upload is enabled it's possible to set up the upload time interval picking a value in the specific select-box:

automatic upload

At the end of the configuration process, disconnect the drive selecting the Disconnect item of the "USB Drive" menu. Then extract the USB drive from the pc and insert it in the (turned off) device.

Plug the device to restart it (startup should need a minute or two).

Warning: do not start the device without the USB drive!

If both the device and the pc are connected to a local network, now it's possible to check the device date/time while it's working: in order to get that, select the item with name of the device in the select-box.

select device

Then go to the Date/time Tab.

Click the check device date/time/tz to get the current date-time and timezone of the device.
If necessary, click the set device date/time/tz button to adjust the device to the pc values.
Note: due to the unavoidable delay in data transmission through a network, a few seconds difference is quite normal and insignificant to statistics.

How to turn the device off
Click the stop device button in the Monitor Tab.

How to restart the device
Click the restart device button in the Monitor Tab.

How to check the device date and time
Click the check device date/time/tz button in the Date/time Tab.

How to backup imported data
Click the backup imported data button in the Data Tab.

It's the tab that appears when a device is selected.

It shows some device information and allows some main functions:

  • Name (normally ptcrb or ptcrb1, ptcrb2, etc. in case of many)
  • Local IP (IP address in the local network)
  • Check local IP button
  • TEST mode (enabled/disabled)
  • Registration code for the People Tally Counter website
  • Activation button
  • Automatic upload of data (enabled/disabled)
  • Uploads time interval
  • Single hit mode (enabled/disabled)

Check ip button
If the device is turned on and connected to the local network, this button allows to check the device local IP.

check ip button

Note: we suggest not to modify the ip value if you're not sure of it.

In this tab you can configure the WiFi connection parameters of the device.

If the connection doesn't require a password leave blank the Password field. Leave blank the SSID textbox to disable the WiFi connection.

N.B. Remind to click the save changes button after modifications.

If the pc and the device are both connected to the local network, in this tab you can get and set the date and time (and timezone too) of the device while it's working.

This tab permits to check if the device is properly working and provides the proper procedures to halt and restart it. Infact we strongly recommed not to stop the device by unplugging it.

The PTC-Tools program uses the device name as default parameter for the connection procedure between the pc and the device. However, it can happen that the procedure results more efficient using the device local IP instead: please then note that the ip value can change from time to time depending on the router configuration. In any case, using the device name will update the ip value stored in the program.

Note: the monitor procedures cannot grant 100% that the device internal applications are properly working. Events detection and data uploads must be verified checking periodically the online statistics and locally exporting data.

This tab allows to see the test passages and to manage data if the device is not connected to the Internet.

Import new data from usb drive button
If the device USB drive has been connected to the program by the USB Drive > Connect menu (the icon at the left of the devices selectbox is green), then it's possible to import the new data from the drive.

drive connected
drive disconnected

Data from the device USB drive will be stored in the program's database.
We strongly suggest to create periodic backups of data, regardless if the device is connected to the Internet or not and of the automatic upload checkbox state.

Export data to file button
All events (stored passages) imported in the local database are saved to a CSV file.

Upload data to website button
If the automatic upload is disabled, data stored in the pc are sent via Internet to the remote server for the statistics.

Backup imported data button
We strongly advice to import data periodically and then to create a backup copy.

Restore from backup button
To restore local database from a previous backup copy.
Warning: this process cannot be cancelled or reversed in any way.
N.B. this procedure does not affect any data on the device nor in the People Tally Counter server.

Show test data button
To display the test passages when the TEST mode is enabled.

Delete test data button
To delete the test data.

Activation allows the device to send data to the remote server for the online statistics. Only devices registered in People Tally Counter website ( can be activated.

To register a device, sign in the People Tally Counter website by the login form and then click the My Devices item of the My Area menu (click here for details).

Device registration requires[*] the code you can find in the Configuration Tab of the program:

[*] Description, Analytics Tracking ID and Website URL are optional.

To activate the device, click the activate device button in the Configuration Tab.
